Last year, some of our good friends introduced us to the "Elf on the Shelf" tradition. I was over at their house dropping something off and their little boys bombarded me saying "We have an elf!! Come see!" They excitedly took me to the kitchen and sure enough, there was a cute little elf sitting on top of their cabinets. We've picked up our very own elf this year and the kids are having so much fun with it.
The elf gets his magic when you open the box and give him a name. We aptly named our elf Simon, after the dog Anthony and I loved like crazy for a few years until we had children and then couldn't stand him. Hopefully things will go better with this Simon. Simon watches us all day long. Then while we sleep, he flies to the North Pole and reports to Santa on how good or bad we were. Every morning, he's in a different spot.
The kids are not allowed to touch him, or he will lose his magic. They can, however, speak to him and tell him what they want for Christmas. He is not allowed to speak to them - Santa's orders. Both of the kids look for him first thing every morning and Addie explains the rules to every person who comes in the door. Yesterday he was on a shelf in the pantry. Jack took full advantage of the door and closed it so he could be a bad boy. His words, not mine!
Here is our elf, perched on our shelf.

You can learn more about this fun tradition at www.elfontheshelf.com. We started it after Thanksgiving and it has already been so much fun.

We just got ours a couple of days ago and tonight we read it to our boys for the first time! My four year old is so excited already and won't stop asking questions! He's already wondering where our elf will be in the morning when he wakes up. What a cute idea...

until you run out of places to put that dang elf.
